Harbin Park, Fairfield, OH, TT Finale!

August 31, 2007 on 2:36 pm | In Mountain Bike Racing | No Comments

At precisely 07:00:30 pm last night the man yelled go! and Chad sat motionless for a moment. He was contemplating the wonderful aspects of his life. The cool crisp evening that he was racing his mountain bike, his lovely girlfriend Sara, his outstanding teamates at Biowheels and of course Piggy. When he finally put power to the pedals at 07:00:32 he set out with a demonic fire. A 00:19:23 pace that would in the end become the course single lap record. At this pace in less than five minutes into the first lap he was only one turn behind his nemesis, the man that started thirty seconds ahead of him C Huck Miller.

If you’re keeping track Irey beat Miller by four minutes on a course four times the distance two weeks earlier. So the current pace seems to be right on par for the season and Irey should pass his nemesis by the end of the lap and proceed to polish him off by another thirty seconds by race end. BioWheels’ Jeremy Hargroves Won Ocoee’s Black Bear Rampage!

August 31, 2007 on 12:42 pm | In Mountain Bike Racing | No Comments

Chattanooga was a real BioWheels weekend if I’ve ever seen one. 1st was the Downtown beerfest on Sat, where you payed 15$ & got to drink all kinds of amazing regional beers w/ music & stuff on the river.

Then the race was Sunday, which was an amzing cross country mtn. biking course, consisting of 43 miles of mostly single track in & around the Ocoee Gorge. Started @ 8:30am on Sunday & all the pros, semipros, & experts were lumped together in the 1st wave of the start. This distance wasn’t quite endurance, but wasn’t really a cross country distance, so I decided to go out medium/fast pace & then really pick it up in the last 10 or so miles & it worked, as I picked up my pace @ the end I caught & past the couple of semipros & pros holding 1st & 2nd & took 1st in 3hr & 30sec.

Oh Yeah, big ups to Kyley for doing her 1st 40+ mile mtn. bike race. Kassi Day had a very strong race, taking 4th in her category

Thanks to BioWheels for letting me race their lovely Cannondale Rush SL.

Here is a photo collection of the event.

BWR’s Chris Emory Takes 2nd at Salisbury RR

August 25, 2007 on 12:14 pm | In Road Racing | No Comments
I rode down to Salibury with Nate on Saturday and rode the hotter’n hell 68 mile Rock Hill RR resulting in a second place finish (CAT 3).  During the race I only drank 3 bottles which resulted in 3 hours after the race before I had to take a leak; even after 5 beers, 3 gatorades, 2 cheerwines, and 2 bottles of water.
Bodily functions aside it was a nice course mostly on newly paved roads allowing high speeds.  My race was 5 laps and I actually sat for 2 laps before I began to attack.  I was in a 3 man break on the third lap which was being dangled 1/4 mile from the peloton but on the next lap I broke with a strong group that the pack chased furiously until we were ran down while in a lull.  On the final lap two groups of two were allowed to get to far up the road for my likeing and I threw in a huge effort up a small hill passing the front of the peloton at 30mph and increasing speed as the road leveled out.  The pack chased hard but only 3 guys continued to chase.  I slowed a bit and when they got on I picked up the pace and we began rotating until we picked off the next two groups.
Mostly everyone worked as we rotated with a few taking breaks but when we neared the finish I was stuck up front as everyone was attempting to sit on a single guy who was a TT champ I believe.  On the final road there were two risors and I planned to go on the final one but was confused as to where I was and ended up jumping on the first.  Good thing was nobody was covering my wheel and I jumped hard and fast especially since I thought I was down to 1/2 mile to go instead of a mile but I was able to hold all but one off who charged past in the last 50 meters after sitting on the chase pack.- Chris Emory

OMBC Caesars Creek-That Guy on the CX Bike

When I first saw that guy on the CX bike (far right in pic-white helmet) I made a snarfy comment. BioWheels teammate Mitch Graham and I passed him going the other way on our warm up roll down Harveysburg Road. I said to Mitch, something to the effect of, “it crossed my mind, but I had better judgment (than to race a cyclocross bike at Caesars).” I think Mitch shared my feelings, but he bit his tongue reserving verbal judgment. He, like I, have been getting crushed by that dude in the jean shorts for years. When it comes to mountain bike racing, don’t believe your eyes. Beware of guys on CX bikes, in jean shorts and old Styrofoam helmets with purple lycra covers.

It was a nice CX bike. It looked like naked scandium with nice disc brakes and some fatty 2.1 tires mounted on sweet wheels. I actually shared a word with him before the start and inquired about his gi-normous tires. He was wearing a Fulcrum Coaching team jersey, but I still didn’t recognize him. At the time, I was high tailing it back to the Bio Wheels tent to fix my chain which I twisted in my abbreviated warm up. Worried about my chain, I guess I never looked up to put a face with the bike. It wasn’t Dan Tille. We rolled together along with Bandwidth’s Brian Nieport, who was racing his second ever expert mountain bike race. It’s still a novelty to see Brian on a mountain bike.

I performed link replacement surgery on my chain with two minutes to spare before the roll-out. I lost track of that guy on the CX bike. According to Bio Wheels teammate, Chad Irey, that guy on the CX bike got into the single track within the top 5 experts and proceeded to yard-sale-it on the first awkward up-and-down-turn-around. When he ate it, I hear it turned into a chaotic hike-a-bike which split the first few riders off the front of the expert field. Luckily Chad was in front of the mayhem and made the split. Unfortunately that guy on the CX bike got dispatched to the rear. Continue reading OMBC Caesars Creek-That Guy on the CX Bike…

Augusta Cyclismo Stage Race, Augusta, GA

August 19, 2007 on 5:36 pm | In Road Racing | No Comments

8/18-19/2007The Augusta stage race is a part of the Georgia Cup Series and a pretty challenging event. Most multi-race events on the south east calender are Omniums. This is when the overall winer is determined by points awarded for placing high in the individual events. Augusta and several other Ga Cup events this year have switched over to a stage race format with time bonus awarded for high placings (bonuses are also given for inner race competitions as well, i.e. KOM, MAR, etc.). For my money, this makes multi-day racing a lot more fun. It awards aggressive riding throughout a race, it benefits consistency, involves riders, and it makes teamwork more important. I didn’t get to race all the events at Augusta but did at Gold Digger and it made for more fun and a greater challenge. Ga Cup races are well run, HARD, and the racing categories offer more flexibility for the riders. Really, I could go on and on about how cool these races are.  BioWheels was represented in Augusta by Continue reading Augusta Cyclismo Stage Race, Augusta, GA…

BWR’s Chris Emory wins State Track Championship Gold!

August 18, 2007 on 11:05 am | In Road Racing | No Comments
8/18/07 - The mellowdrome hosted the North/South Carolina State Track Championships this past weekend I represented the BWR contingent but since I’m only a cat. 5 on the track (until I make it to Dick Lane Atl.) I wasn’t able to do individual events but I did compete in Team events with Chris and Doug of the ‘bloods’ across town.  In track championship races there are no divisions everyone races elite men, women, old fart, or junior.
We began with the Team Pursuit 4000m with 4 men taking half lap pulls but we ended up mid-pack behind many of the pro teams.  This was all to plan since now one would suspect this team of hairy, fat, non-flashy riders in the next race the Team Sprint.  The team sprint is a 3 man 3 lap timed race where each man must pull a lap and pull out of the race leaving the remaining 2 then 1 guy to finish off the race.  We decided it best that I anchor and we just begin a sprint from the gun.  Well the two and three man or Chris and Chris overran then was quickly gapped by the 1st man right at the beginning and I realized I had to casually cover ground without expending energy.  Once the second man pulled off just before the last lap I stood for a couple of strokes to get up to max speed and attempted to hold the sprint in the saddle for the entire lap.  I was rounding the turns so fast the bike was jumping out but I kept pressing and my Jamis Sputnik (available at any Biowheels location) held fast and true.  I tucked low as I rounded the final bend and crushed the pedals to finish 3/4 of a second ahead of the next pro team.  Incidentally the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th teams were all within hundredths of a second from one another.- Chris Emory

Perfect Trails at Night Train 12 Hour Race

August 13, 2007 on 2:12 pm | In Mountain Bike Racing | No Comments

A great deal of energy went into resurrecting the NightTrain. BioWheels is proud to be associated with Rusty Sprocket Productions. Darrin T. & his crew did an excellent job. There is no doubt this race will grow next year.

Mother Nature blessed us with dry, but not dusty, trails. The humidity was high, as was the temperature.
With about 80 racers in all, BioWheels-Deltec had 12 competitors.

Thanks to French Broad Brewing Company for the kegs of Gateway Kolsch. Damn fine beer.

Complete results are here.

We’ll add more to this entry soon. -mj

Pooser Podiums in Dahlonega!  8/11-12 /2007

Andy Pooser on the Georgia Cup Podium

Over the past weekend several BioWheels racers including: myself, Andy Pooser, Daniel Crone, Mike Jackson, and Adam Ray raced in Dahlonega, GA. The event was billed as a climbers delight, or (a non-climbers nightmare!) This omnium is run as a stage race. So consistancy will pay off, and a bad day will knock you out of GC contention. There were 3 individual stages used to determine the overall winner. Saturday morning started with a 7K uphill TT. That afternoon, we raced a 50K circuit race over rolling terrain and 1 grunt climb that would prove decisive. Finaly on Sunday there was the “Queen’s Stage” including 4 major climbs and some seriously technical decents. There are also time bonuses for KOM sprints along the course. These sprints are a key feature when trying to take back lost time.

Saturday morning we left the hotel for the TT. We made it there with enough time to drive the course. It was allot less steep than we had heard. However, it was still 7k, and almost all uphill. After we all took our turns suffering up the climb, we checked the times. It was clear that Andy had the legs this weekend. He was sitting in 10th, with Daniel a little further down in 15th and me being close to the bottom at 26th. My role as a workhorse was secured, and Daniel was close enough on time to be a wild card. Adam had a great time, but being in the Pro 123 field made his job much harder. His time Continue reading Georgia Cup #7, Dahlonega, GA….

ORAMM 2007

These are not trails unfamiliar to me, in fact I rode 83% of the ride only 2 weeks prior. So why…why…why was I soooo nervous??? I laid awake for most of the night; when I actually did slip into REM my dreams took every wrong turn on the ORAMM route…why was my head in such turmoil over this??? Breakfast was just not going to happen either…I managed to get some breakfast drink down and compensated my lack of appetite with a gu and started on my Perpetuem drink early. Chris & I arrived in plenty of time to get situated…chat amongst The Misfits…visit the port-a-john waaaaay too many times (at least waiting in line gave me something productive to do) Finally, time to line up with the rest of the crowd and embark on what is known as the hardest ride in WNC….

GO!!!! I manage to stay with the Misfits, drafting…chatting…calming nerves that had
inexplicitly taken over. We turned up our first gravel road where I latched onto Mr. Stone’s rear wheel…not sure if he was so happy about this…he kept looking to see if I was still hanging on! And, yep! I was gonna hang on for as long……ARRRG!!!!!!! MY GLASSES!!! *%$#@#$% NOT AGAIN….I dropped my lenses! See ya boys… (I must get duct tape and secure those things to my head before the next big ride!)

Brand-new ‘07 course

The Ohio Valley promoters are already pumped for the upcoming fall season. Talk of a first-ever World Cup in the US has come and gone (there’s always next year…), but hot damn if we’re not going to have a killer local series next year. 15 OVCX races this year, each with a minimum $1500 payout - 4 UCI races - and 2 US Grand Prix races in Louisville!

For Cincy this fall, we have our first ever UCI DOUBLE. This means more talent flying in from all over to mix it up with our locals. Firm confirmations are yet set in stone at the moment for some of these guys, but some potential names that’ll be ripping around Harbin Park this October - Kona’s Erik Tonkin and Barry Wicks, Danish National Champion Joachim Parbo, Vanilla’s Molly Cameron, and last but certainly not least 2006 World’s Silver Medalist and 3-time National Champion Katie Compton! We’ll let you know when the riders are confirmed. Bar none this will be by far the most world-class field we’ve ever had in 12 years of racing at Harbin Park.
