Racoon Mountain Road Race, Chattanooga TN
April 15, 2007 on 11:49 am | In Road Racing | No Comments41 Degrees, raining and windy at start and throughout the race. A Cat 3 field of 60 or so with Me and Adam ray as the Biowheels squad. Their were several teams with 5 plus team members with the Juris team with 10. The race was slow because of the weather and then on the second lap a two man break started with 25 miles to go. One of the breakers was a Juris team member. Adam and I thought yeah good luck making that stick. 10Miles form the finish we realized they had a 3 minute gap. Adam, me, and few others tried to roll to close the gap but did not have enough time. Lesson 101-Do not underestimate a break especially when you have a breaker with a large team.
With one mile to go to the hill finish Adam asked me when he should go to make his move. I said now! Within 20 seconds Adam had gapped the field by 200 yards. I maintained false tempo at the front of the group to help Adam (like he needed it) to gain a gap. Adam gets third only a minute or less behind the break. I get a respectful 13th as I was not in a good spot to sprint (and I cannot sprint) since I was in front of the group. Good Day for BioWheels!
Part two. As I was getting warm after the race I see the Cat 4’s come in over the hill hauling ASS. I see at the front this big dude looking like a freight train in first place. Chris Emory of Biowheels comes in first. He rides like a Southern Man Jan Ullrich ( minus the drugs)
